Town guide

Tavira & the eastern Algarve

The calm side of the Algarve: a graceful old town on the river, island beaches in the Ria Formosa and seafood straight from the boats.

Why go

Tavira is one of the prettiest towns in Portugal, with churches, tiled houses and a historic bridge over the Gilão river. Ferries cross to Ilha de Tavira, and a little train runs to Praia do Barril, famous for its anchor cemetery.

What to do

Spend a day on the island beaches, eat fresh seafood in Santa Luzia or Olhão, watch the sunset from Cacela Velha, and explore Faro's walled old town.
